The Melukat Ceremony is a traditional Balinese purification ritual involving a sacred water blessing to cleanse the body, mind, and soul from negative influences.
Melukat Ceremony
According to legend, the sacred spring at Tirta Empul Temple was created by the god Indra. When his soldiers were poisoned by the evil king Mayadanawa, Indra struck the earth with his spear, and a magical spring burst forth to heal them. This holy water is believed to hold purifying powers, and it’s the very source used in the Melukat Ceremony to cleanse the body, mind, and spirit.
Mengening Temple takes its name from the Balinese word "Ening," meaning tranquil, silent, or quiet. True to its name, this sacred site is known for its peaceful atmosphere and pure, flowing spring water. The temple is believed to hold strong spiritual energy, making it a powerful place for the Melukat Ceremony, where people come to purify their body, mind, and soul in the crystal-clear waters.
Pesiraman Temple or Pesiraman Dalem Pingit Sebatu was discovered by accident in 2007 when a foreign tourist bathed in the sacred waterfall. After the bath, the water turned murky, washing away negative influences from their body. This surprising event led to rumors that the site held spiritual power. Word quickly spread, and the villagers recognized the area’s sacred significance. Today, Pesiraman Dalem Pingit Sebatu is known as a powerful site for the Melukat Ceremony, where people come to cleanse their body, mind, and soul in its healing waters.
Gunung Kawi Sebatu Temple is often referred to as the "lite version" of Tirta Empul Temple, offering a smaller, more peaceful area with fewer visitors. The sacred waters here emerged from the ground after the prayer of a high Hindu priest. During a long and exhausting journey, the priest and his army became weak and sick from the intense heat. In desperation, the priest prayed to the gods for relief, and the sacred spring appeared, providing water that healed both the priest and his soldiers. Today, the temple is where people come to partake in the Melukat Ceremony.
